It’s been said, “The Lord works in mysterious ways.” But once you read and understand the sentence in A Course in Miracles which says, “This is the world of time where all things end,” it’s not really mysterious at all.
What is mysterious is the way the human mind works, and even today we do not understand much about it. That’s why we owe a debt of gratitude to Helen Schucman for listening to the Voice for seven years and giving us A Course in Miracles. In other times and places she would have been burned at the stake as a witch. Even today fundamentalist Christianity claims A Course in Miracles is the voice of the devil, or a demon. I accept A Course in Miracles as what it is, a well written guide to lead modern people into a better world.
The current state of humanity is truly appalling. We have endless wars, the air is not fit to breath in most of the world, our water isn’t fit to drink, and in general we are killing the earth and our fellow creatures that inhabit it.
Our Church and government institutions have been of no help in bettering the human condition. Let’s start with a list of things the Church and governments have done to make things worse.
1. Christ came into this world to give us the Sermon on The Mount. Had we chosen to live by those words we would have an unimaginable world of peace and prosperity. His reward was to be executed by the ruling class of His day.
2. The Spanish Inquisition
3. The Salem Witch Trials
4. Endless war with men, women, and children killed and raped in the name of God and whatever country happens to be conducting the war.
5. I saved the best for last here. Now of course we kill a lot of people in the name of God and country but I betcha didn’t know we also do a lot of child abuse in the name of God. Who hasn’t heard that quaint old saying, “Spare the rod, spoil the child?” Actually that’s a corruption of what I found to be a whole lot of Bible verses. The most common one is Proverbs 13:24 which in the King James Version reads, “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.” Notice it doesn’t say anything about girls here. I guess our Christian God of mercy decided they weren’t worth beating.
6. Now if our children were just being beaten with a stick in the name of God I suppose that wouldn’t be good but it would be far less than the abuse that occurs every day. Just read any big city newspaper and take note of the horrible examples of child abuse and death that occur on a regular basis.
7. I will close on this note. The Christian God of mercy only wants us to beat our sons because He loves them. Girls can do pretty much what they want and they won’t get beaten. And if you had any doubts or worries He didn’t forget about us. Deuteronomy 8:5 says “ So know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD you God disciplines you.”
